Safety Checks for Equipment & Materials

Disciplined, documented inspection across equipment, fabrication, maintenance and site works.

These safety checks apply across industrial process equipment, fabrication, maintenance and site works, ensuring every item is fit, safe and compliant before and during use.

1. Visual inspection

  • Inspect all equipment and materials for physical damage, wear, corrosion and contamination before each use.
  • Verify that labels, safety instructions and markings are visible and legible.

2. Mechanical integrity

  • Check moving parts, guards, belts, drives and fasteners for proper operation and security.
  • Inspect structural members (tanks, frames and supports) for fatigue, distortion, cracks or weld integrity.

3. Electrical safety

  • Assess wiring, controls, junction boxes and panels for damage, overheating, exposed wires and correct grounding.
  • Test start/stop switches and emergency buttons for proper operation.
  • Verify Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures are available and implemented during maintenance.

4. Pressure & leak checks

  • Inspect pressure vessels, piping, heat exchangers and tubing for leaks, residue, sealing and correct pressure ratings.
  • Ensure gauges display within operational limits; examine hoses and fittings for wear and leaks.

5. Safety systems function

  • Test emergency stops, alarms, interlocks and pressure relief valves for reliable function.
  • Ensure machine guards, fences, barriers and light curtains are in place and operational.

6. Housekeeping, ergonomics & storage

  • Confirm materials are stored securely, aisles are clear and housekeeping standards prevent tripping or tipping hazards.
  • Assess ergonomics of workstations and manual handling risk.

7. Fire & hazardous material controls

  • Check fire extinguishers, alarms, signage and emergency exits for accessibility and working condition.
  • Confirm hazardous materials are labelled, stored and handled according to regulation.

8. Personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Inspect availability, condition and correct use of PPE such as gloves, helmets, goggles and respiratory gear.

9. Documentation & certification

  • Ensure operator certifications and equipment-specific training records are current and available.
  • Record and review incident history, repairs and modifications for each equipment item.

Documentation & records

Accurate documentation is vital for compliance, maintenance and continuous safety improvement.

Record typeDescriptionFrequency
Safety Inspection ChecklistDated, itemized list of all safety checks performed, signed by the inspectorEvery inspection / monthly
Maintenance LogsRepairs, replacements and servicing performed, with dates and responsible personnelOngoing / as needed
Equipment History FileSerial numbers, location, commissioning date, inspection and maintenance historyUpdate after change
Incident ReportsAccidents, near-misses or hazards, with corrective actions specifiedAs occurred
PPE Inventory & Issue RegisterCondition of issued PPE, with training and user signaturesPeriodic
Operator Certification FileCurrent training certificates, licenses and renewals for relevant equipmentAs updated

Records are dated, signed and stored securely, audited regularly for gaps and non-compliance, demonstrating due diligence and supporting proactive maintenance and regulatory compliance.
